What do these paintings tell?
Old paintings are full of stories, known to some, but forgotten to most. They come from the time when many people could read nor write, where it was easier to understand a painting than a book. In the Frans hals museum, that is stuffed with these paintings, they created an introduction to give visitors some idea of what they where all about. Although it looks very visual this introduction is mostly about understanding, about reading between the lines and that is an interesting thing in times where we have now become illiterate when it comes to images. This presentation not only explains, but also tries to capture the essence and ecxellence ot these paintings and the times in which they where made. It certainly helped me to understand more of the expressive power that lies beneath the surface of oil on canvas.
