In the heart of Utrecht you can find a wonderful example of Roman history coming to life. In the underground caves of the Domplein three mediaeval cellars are transformed into a Treasury where visitors can discover the 2000 years of history of the square.
The first cellar leads the visitors through the most important episodes. A series of trailers present fragments of Roman and medieval history while the cellar structure itself is shaped by light and sound effects. The next space inspires an interactive narrative. Here visitors can browse through drawers, photos, street plans, fragments and short films.
Finally in the last cellar stands an underground Roman wall. Here archaeologists are looking for further parts of the wall. This active archeological site is not just a “bunch of stone” but has become an integral part of the Dom square treasury.
